Arlet Veurink

Professional Biography:
I graduated from Dordt College in Sioux Center, IA in 1989 with a BA degree in Elementary Education and Special Education. I began my teaching career at San Jose Christian School teaching a 3rd/4th grade combo. After only 2 years at SJCS I returned to Iowa where I taught in the SCI (Special Class with Integration) K-5 at Kinsey Elementary in Sioux Center, Iowa and MOC-Floyd Valley Elementary School in Orange City, Iowa for 4 years. My students had moderate to severe special needs. In 1995, I returned to SJCS. Since returning I have taught 2nd grade, kindergarten, Math 6/7 and Math 7/8. In 1999, SJCS started the Learning Center program. In 2004, I received my master’s degree in Special Education from San Jose State University. It has been with great joy that I continue to work with students who learn through different methods than are taught in the classroom.

Christian Philosophy of Education:
As education has changed over the years, so have my views of certain aspects of this field. However, one thing has remained steadfast and central in my philosophy, and it is evident in my teaching: all students are gifts from God. My students, no matter what their ability level, have been given to me for just a short period of time. During that time I desire to be a positive influence in their academic, emotional and spiritual growth. My work in the Learning Center gives me the chance to have a real impact on students’ current academic experiences, as well as those in the future. Establishing in them a positive view of themselves and the gifts that God has given them is central in our daily interactions. Each student is a unique creation with unique strengths and struggles. It is my desire for my students to walk in my classroom knowing it is an environment that is safe, loving and full of mutual respect. My hope is that they leave more equipped to serve as God intended them to serve to their best capacity.
